Xerostomia, commonly known as dry mouth, can leave your mouth feeling like the Sahara Desert. It can also lead to pain and discomfort as well as difficulty swallowing food. To treat dry mouth, you have to treat the underlying cause. However, in the meantime, there are ways to cope with it. See them outlined below.
Stay Hydrated
This may be obvious, but it's still important. It's essential to stay hydrated and drink water frequently throughout the day. You can also suck on ice chips or have sugar-free fluids. This is especially important during meals so that chewing and swallowing is easier.
Chew Gum
Stimulate saliva production by chewing gum. Make sure that the gum is sugar-free – xylitol is a good option since it counters bacteria. However, it is important not to go overboard with this because too much xylitol can result in diarrhea and cramps. If you're not particularly fond of gum, you can also stimulate saliva production by sucking on sugar-free candy.
Use Artificial Saliva and Moisturizing Mouthwash
Artificial saliva is a great option to keep your mouth hydrated – look out for ingredients such as xylitol, carboxymethylcellulose, or hydroxyethyl cellulose in these products. It's also important to replace your alcohol-based mouthwash with a moisturizing one. An alcohol-based mouthwash will only make the dryness worse.
Use a Humidifier
Another way to cope with dry mouth is to add moisture to the air, especially at night. You can do this with a humidifier so that your nasal passages and mouth don't dry out.
